Happy 1st of May

The weather has been warm the last two weeks. I think it is the first time the cherry is in bloom this early. This is the 5th spring I am photographing this tree, my favorite cherry tree. It looked a bit smaller this time. My husband noticed one branch is gone. Maybe because of heavy snow. It almost looked like the apple would bloom extra early too. But, there has been a change in the weather. The temperature dropped from plus 20 Celsius daytime to about 10. Also we have had some night frost.

Hanami 2017

The Hanami Festival in the cherry park in Roihuvuori was planned to take place last Sunday, May 14. For some reason the arrangers of the event decided to changed it to a week later on May 21, today. That was a good move because had it taken place last Sunday the cherry trees had not been in bloom. Now was the most perfect day for the event. Warm, blue skies, beautiful cherry blossom and, oh my goodness, thousands of visitors. More than ever before.

Cherry Blossom

Last year I was photographing the cherry tree in full bloom on May 7. Today we went to Lidl to shop. At home we had been talking about how beautiful the cherry tree close to Lidl was last spring. We thought it would not be in bloom yet as the spring has been pretty cold. Surprise, surprise ! In full bloom ! It is so beautiful. Two guys also were there taking photos and we talked about how amazing it is. The other one said he doesn’t think it’s a cherry tree. The other one and I looked at each other in disbelief but neither of us said anything. Either way, it is or not, I will still call it a cherry tree 🙂

Cherry Trees In Bloom

Sometimes I watch the Japanese television channel NHK. Recently there was a program about the cherry trees in bloom at Mt. Yoshino. I saw the same program once before but was pleased to do it again. Thousands of cherry trees in full bloom. So beautiful. Absolutely mesmerizing. I said to my husband that I hope he too will have the opportunity to watch the program. Also I said wouldn’t it be an amazing experience to once go to Japan to experience the cherry blossom. If you want to see many cherry trees, my husband said, you need not go further than to Herttoniemi cherry tree park to see them flower. Really! I did not know there is such a place ! Herttoniemi is only about 20 km away from where we live. Our first home when we married in 1967 was in Herttoniemi not far from the cherry tree park. We went to the park yesterday. Wow ! Oh how beautiful. There are about 150 trees planted 8 years ago. It’s not Yoshino but very much worth going there.
