Egg Rice Pastries

For some time already I have had on my mind to bake egg rice pastries. I actually bought a package of deep frozen puff pastry already a couple of days ago. Today is a rainy, bit chilly day. A perfect day for baking. It’s a long time since last time I made them. I cannot even remember when. Perhaps I should make them more often.

Cranes

Cranes IMG_6064CCCranes IMG_6076CCCranes IMG_6112CCranes IMG_6115CFour cranes in the grain field. Once again I wish I had had a super zoom lens. Unfortunately I don’t but it doesn’t stop me from photographing. These needed rough cropping and are what they are. I think, despite the poor quality, the cranes look quite nice walking in the grain field.

Naïve Art Exhibition

Yesterday I, together with friends, visited the naïve art exhibition in Iittala, Lasimäki. Paintings by many artists, about 40. Here are a few photos. I, of course, love the cats painted by Martti Lehto. They are adorable. We also visited the Glass Museum, shopped at Finlayson and Iittala outlet stores. At Finlayson I bought a beautiful umbrella and at Iittala a Myrna mug. It was a such a nice day. The Myrna coffee pot is one I bought 10 years ago. The inside of it is in bad condition so it’s not for use, just display.

Strawberry Candy Daylily

I thought the Strawberry Candy lily wouldn’t bloom at all this summer. Usually first flowers flower in the last days of July. I was happy to, at about the end of July, finally see three stems grow taller day by day. On Friday 11th August the first flower was in bloom. Each stem has about 12-10 buds. I will be able to enjoy new flower(s) still for about one week. Nice.

Severe Thunderstorm

Yesterday the Finnish Meteorological Institute warned about severe thunderstorms for the evening. I and Canelo returned from our regular evening walk at about 7 pm. I said to my husband, my goodness you should see the clouds coming in over the lake. It’s gonna be a terrible thunderstorm. We decided to go down there in the car. Five or six other cars were there as well. We needed not wait more than minutes. Everything happened with such speed that my first clip was a mess. I had to run the few meters to get into the car seconds before it broke loose. I immediately regretted, it was foolish to go there. I shot a new clip from inside the car but as I was only concentrating on the storm and not on my camera also this clip is no good at all. Despite the quality I think you can get the picture of how it was.You can hear us talking to each other in disbelief. Then my husband says we have to go home before any of the trees fall down. We turned the car to take the fastest way home. Hold and below ! There was a fallen tree cross the road. We had to take the other way where were many big branches on the road. This strong weather is unusual here. Good thing is it didn’t last for a long time.

Summer Squash ~ Zucchini

In the end of the spring, beginning of the summer my friend gave me two summer squash plants. For a long time nothing happened. It very much looked the plants had stopped growing. Then suddenly the leaves were huge and not long ago there was the first flower. A large, yellow flower. In a couple of days we were able to see there would be a summer squash. The other day there was two of them, big enough to pick and use. Yay, my first summer squashes 😀 Thank you my friend 🙂 I made a summer squash cauliflower gratin. I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of it. Well, next time because there will be many more of them very soon.

Sparrows & Flying Ants

I’m not sure do the flying ants appear here every summer.  When they do they always disappear as quickly as they appear, usually this time of the year. On Tuesday there was many and the sparrows were so excited that they hardly noticed us being there too. They ate and ate. In the evening there were no more ants with wings.
